  2. Surfrider Tells Resident To Shut Up

    Friday, December 6, 2019 12:26 pm

On Oct. 15, 2019, life-long IB resident Leon Benham received a threatening letter from Surfrider warning him to immediately stop expressing his views on the Surfrider-supported so-called Tijuana River Valley (TRV) Stakeholder’s Solution to sewage originating from Mexico. (NOTE: you can read the full text of the letter at https://citizensforcoastalconservancy.org/surfrider-cease-and-desist/). This attempted prohibition on public discussion was meant to include “Letters to the Editor,” such as this one. This “cease and desist” letter was signed by Surfrider Chief Operating Officer Michelle Kremer, and cc’d to Surfrider Chief Executive Officer Chad Nelson. Not only do these two individuals not reside in IB or the border area, they do not even reside in San Diego County! This nevertheless did not stop them from trying to keep Mr. Benham quiet about what was happening literally in his own backyard.

  4. Ted And Jody Henry ...

Coronado Residents Ted and Jody Henry are both natives of Cleveland. Ted is featured in a new Netflix Documentary entitled “The Devil Next Door,” about the Jan Demjanjuk trials in the 1970’s and 80’s, both in news clips from his time as a news anchor at WEWS Television in Cleveland and in present day interviews.
  5. Coronado’s Ted Henry Featured In Netflix Documentary

    Friday, December 6, 2019 12:16 pm

Ted Henry, his wife Jody, and yours truly are all members of the Coronado Library’s Mystery Book Club which meets monthly and is moderated by Principal Librarian Franklin Escobedo. A typical meeting includes 30 minutes of discussion about the assigned book and 30 minutes of extemporaneous conversation that runs the gamut of topics. Most of the regulars have been around a while and it’s a fun group.

At some point over the years Ted Henry noted that he had been a journalist on a television station in Cleveland, Ohio for a number of years. My wife Sharon grew up in Akron and via visits to the area I have acquired some limited knowledge of the Northeast Ohio area. So it wasn’t a total surprise that Ted plays a major role in the five-part documentary series entitled “The Devil Next Door,” which I hasten to add doesn’t refer to Henry. Instead the series is based on the trials of accused Nazi war criminal Jan Demjanjuk, who settled in Cleveland after World War II and was a married auto worker with three children. Specifically Demjanjuk was charged with being the notorious “Ivan the Terrible,” who was in charge of the Treblinka death camps. Virtually everything in Ted Henry, Jr.’s educational and work background led to his expert coverage of the Demjanjuk trials, and the related story of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

  7. CIFF Classic Movie Series To Present “Working Girl” On Dec. 11

    Friday, December 6, 2019 12:12 pm

Released just days before Christmas in 1988, director Mike Nichols’ New York-based romantic comedy, “Working Girl,” will screen on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. at Coronado’s Village Theatre, 820 Orange Ave, the final selection of the year in Coronado Island Film Festival’s popular Classic Movie Series.

  8. Coronado Girls Basketball Team Goes 2-2 In Thanksgiving Tournament

    Friday, December 6, 2019 12:08 pm

Playing four basketball games in 46 hours can be a challenge. The Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Islander Girls Basketball Team, under the direction of Head Coach Toler Goodwin, played four games, all against solid competition and emerged with a 2-2 record. When combined with an early-season victory over Canyon Crest Academy, Coronado is now 3-2 on the season.

The first game of the tournament was a 39-36 win over Chula Vista, which saw the Islanders with a lead at the conclusion of every quarter. But the Spartans wouldn’t go away and with 4:38 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Spartans took the lead, which they held for the next 90 seconds. At that point in the game, Lauren White scored on a driving layup, Courtney Williams had a steal, White converted a free throw, she grabbed a defensive bound on the other end of the floor, which was followed shortly by a defensive rebound from Janie Ruttert, who then converted two free throws. The victory was sealed by a Gianna Spatafore defensive rebound.

Ruttert was the statistical leader for the Islanders with 14 points, eight rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. Williams accounted for 11 points, two rebounds and a steal; Lauren White had seven points, seven rebounds and three assists; while Spatafore scored four points but led Coronado with 10 rebounds to go with two assists and two steals; Allison White had a point and four rebounds; and Ella Ackerly had a basket and four rebounds.
