A 200 room hotel and parking garage on the Coronado Bay Front, next to Il Fornaio! Do you know anyone in Coronado who wants that to happen? Do you know anyone in Coronado who is not irate that such a thing has even been suggested?

Right, no one, that is except our own representative to the San Diego Port Commission, Garry Bonelli. On March 5 at the Landing Homeowners’ meeting we all thought Bonelli got the message. Don’t do that. But at the June 18 Coronado City council meeting, there it was again. That parcel is controlled by the Port, and the Port Master Plan is insisting upon said hotel.

This is the commission that killed Anthony’s Fish Grotto, and is proud of blocking off the San Diego waterfront with a wall of towering hotels and a giant convention center. The same commission that allowed a ball park to be built that faces city buildings instead of the sweeping bay views. This is the commission that proposes controlling Coronado with the same very bad, terrible, awful, short sighted, dumber than dumb planning.

And the worst of this is that the new Port Commission Chairperson is the same Bonelli, Coronado’s representative, who obviously blatantly does not represent Coronado.

What to do?

Since Bonelli has made it plain he cares not for what Coronado wants, I advocate for finding a way to fire him from the Port Commission (Coronado appointed him, right?), and appointing a replacement who has a solid background in waterfront planning. And who is sensitive to what the citizens of this uniquely beautiful community want. In appointing Bonelli originally the City Council members at the time made a lot about his status as a retired Naval Reserve Rear Admiral. Big mistake. Flag Rank is one thing, planning expertise is something else entirely.
