The Port’s master plan for Coronado proposes to cash in on and profit from the national, state and local treasure that our Coronado community calls home.

Instead of an architecturally congruent plan tying the Ferry Landing to the iconic family oceanfront destination that defines our community, the Port proposes to erect a slick and massive theme-park like glass and chrome monstrosity in the middle of a residential community. The Port’s plan is almost shocking in tone-deafness. The master plan references the word “residential” 18 times in the development document, but entirely fails to mention the residential nature of Coronado, the only residential community immediately adjacent to the Port’s planning district.

Our community is both indelibly tied to the ocean and grounded in historic charm. Coronado features parks, not plazas. Our community reflects our identity in warm, wood welcoming tones, not self-limiting sterile spaces only accessible to those with the financial means to enjoy them.

Commissioner Bonelli, you do not know who we are. And if you do not know who we are, you cannot plan for us. We do not live here to enhance the Port’s financial interests or to gratify egos. We do not make our home here to sustain some outside developer’s balance sheet. We live here because we currently serve or have served our country, because we want our children to learn what it means to care and be cared for, and because being a small part of a larger whole is profoundly and humanly rewarding, a gift growing regrettably scarce in our country.

We will not sacrifice our community to a grandiose and commercialized wonderfront. Our village will not be a casualty in the Port’s insatiable appetite for cash.

We are community.

We are Coronado.
