I don’t follow social media, but a friend recently told me that a new business in Coronado is already receiving negative reviews from some residents. This got me thinking about our town and how we might better support one another.

From everything I’ve read, it’s becoming more and more difficult for neighborhood restaurants, shops, and services – in small towns all across America – to survive. Social media, in turn, has the power to help or harm these businesses. Given that Coronado is a resort destination, our residents’ social media reach extends well beyond this small island, influencing incoming travelers from across the country and around the world.

With that in mind, Coronado residents could come together – out of loyalty to our hometown and the businesses who reside here – by using social media to showcase the best of who we are. This would mean posting positive reviews whenever we’re inspired … and taking the time to pause and reconsider before submitting negative ones. In this pause, instead of posting, perhaps we could voice our complaints in person to the business’s manager or owner; or perhaps we could vent to friends and family; or perhaps we could reevaluate our post entirely and consider the lasting damage it might do.

Since word spreads quickly enough in Coronado (even without social media), residents can easily keep up with the downtown buzz – both positive and negative. Let’s leave it to outsiders to critique our commercial community. Coronadans, in turn, could stand together with the businesses that serve us, appreciating that we have lots of options from which to choose. Beyond that, every restaurant, shop, and service business that prospers increases the likelihood that others will do the same – healthy commercial districts depend on this synergy.

If anyone on social media is interested in pursuing this, I would be happy to help at cedonovan1@aol.com.

Sincerely
