Coronado has been called the “Mayberry” of the 21st century, evoking an image where kids are free to roam and explore their surroundings with safety, families are strong, and integrity is as common as the air we breathe. If that were only true. A recent study conducted at the high school found 26 students identified as high-risk for suicide, 30 more deemed at moderate risk for suicide, and one student was immediately hospitalized.

The Logos Youth Center would provide an adult supervised “hang-out” for our youth; a space where youth could come for recreation, do homework and where caring adults are present to engage, listen and mentor.

Graham Memorial has approximately 50 youth involved in weekly activities. Our hope is to grow those numbers. We have been accused of providing such a large space because of hidden agendas. These are false accusations, with no evidence to back them up.

Yes, the coalition of community leaders who created the vision and championed the development of the Logos Youth Center are unashamedly Christian. We want to encourage and welcome youth of all backgrounds and beliefs to wrestle with questions concerning faith, ethics and morality. Has our community come to a place where a select but influential few of our elected leaders who believe that such a place for our youth would be a bad thing for our community, are able to deny the building of a youth center, one offered to the community at no cost to the city?

God help us.
