The City Council, with City Engineer Cliff Maurer and support from City Manager Blair King, has taken official action to preserve the 120 years old scored sidewalks that have been desecrated here and there over the last 50-plus years by assorted construction projects.

Residents who happen to notice any city sidewalk work that does not result with a replacement that is an exact reproduction of the original elegant design are urged to notify Mr. Maurer at the Public Services Department number, 619-522-7380.

The destruction has been inadvertent because concrete contractors are not architectural historians or urban designers. This direct guidance should fix that. In case there are any slip ups, a little watch dog work from village residents will be welcome. Replacing the ugly rough patches is going to take decades, but we have a start.
