Thanksgiving for the Monarch School

I am overwhelmed by the generosity and selflessness of my Coronado friends and neighbors who once again helped make Thanksgiving joyful and festive for homeless families in our region.

A total of 40 roasted turkeys and 10 gallons of homemade gravy rolled over the bridge from our kitchens to the Monarch School on Saturday, Nov. 17. This is the second year that Coronado has provided the bulk of turkeys for the school’s annual fall festival, an event that serves some 400 students and family members.

For nearly three decades Monarch has performed as school, social services agency and safe harbor for homeless children from kindergarten through high school. Its students live in shelters, motels, single room occupancy housing, doubled-up or tripled-up with other families, at camp sites, in cars, or on the streets. Many of these children are far behind in their education. None of them did anything to deserve the hand they have been dealt.

As a classroom volunteer at Monarch, I witness strength of character and great potential from these children every week. They are capable and motivated. While most are closing the gap academically, it’s unlikely any of them will catch up in a single year. No matter. Monarch plays the long game. It creates a community of students, families, faculty, staff and volunteers where everyone pulls each other up. That’s why events like the fall festival are important and why the support of our Coronado community is so valuable to the Monarch community.
