Thanks to David Axelson for your excellent article on the 1001 new homes being forced on Coronado by Kevin Faulkner. It brought back memories of the same sort of thing that happened in East Village a few years ago. I was manager of Alcazar apartments at the time, a lovely 1929 building Mediterranean style with Balboa park style tile work at the entrance. It stands on a hill overlooking the city, is unique in the area and shone with a lovely warmth in the afternoon sun. My apartment looked out over the city with some harbor and Point Loma views and gorgeous sunsets. She is a grand old lady who’s tenants love and appreciate her and many have been there for over 20 years.

Then comes the big development. As East Village became trendy we were assured that it’s history would be respected. That turned out to be a big smokescreen.

If we had been just a few years older the building would have been protected from being obscured by another. I attended several meetings on the development plans, was horrified by their design which was calculated to squeeze as many units as they could, obliterating our views and the cities view of us. Having some experience in architecture I drew up some revised designs and submitted these. I was given a patronizing pat on the head and dismissed, but not before I had managed to ruffle a few of the committees feathers.

Now your article has brought that all back and I feel very angry to see this same thing and same tactics being forced on beautiful Coronado. Shameful that they forced this through without allowing other studies to be done and presented. Dirty politics, all about money, look into who has been buying up San Diego, many have gone under pseudonyms but if you dig a little it gets real dirty.
