When I wrote that sentence for an opinion piece in the Eagle & Journal two weeks ago I anticipated objections from the right-to-life-no-matter-the-circumstance advocates. I did not expect to be compared with Nazi Germany where disabled people were routinely exterminated, along with thousands of able-bodied individuals the leadership declared ethnically unacceptable.

Over the years I have loved getting reader response, but this is my first experience with harsh negative reaction. OK, welcome. I get it, because my only sibling was a high functioning special-needs. A birth injury, therefor not predictable, so I know from deep personal experience the toll that kind of tragedy takes on all concerned. I understand the fierce devotion parents will give to their responsibilities for a human life they have produced that forever requires specialized care. And I know the terror cared-for individuals experience when their life-long protectors, and servers, and defenders, inevitably age out. Are taken from them by illness or death. Tragedy compounded by tragedy.

A woman’s right to choose has nothing to do with any of the above. No doubt there will continue to be mothers who decide to accept “God’s Will” regardless of circumstances, but women deserve the right to make that decision for themselves. To determine what, where, when, or if ever they can provide the care and affection all children need.

If Roe V Wade is cancelled, the next step American women are entitled to is this: Federal laws requiring the genetic testing of every live berth to identify the male parent, automatically triggering 18 years of financial child support, plus health care for the inevitable cases when special needs babies are born. Because women do not impregnate themselves. “Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander” is an antique expression that covers this issue perfectly.
