In his “Reflections on Passing the Torch” commentary, Mr. Kelly has the following line “clean fuel like natural gas.” Natural gas is not clean. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is mostly methane. Natural gas wells and pipelines are notorious for leaking methane into the atmosphere. This is a problem because methane is 34 times more potent at trapping heat than CO2. Burning natural gas may release less CO2 than coal but it is still releasing CO2 and when you add in the leaking methane we are back where we started.

One more issue, the U.S. may account for “only” 15 percent of greenhouse gas emissions but we are only 4.5 percent of the world population. We have the technology to reduce our emissions using sustainable energy. It’s cleaner and it’s cheaper. It’s not going to hurt the U.S. to act like a world leader and lead by example, while also working with countries around the world to help reduce the effects of a warming climate.

Mr. Kelly states that young people seem to be obsessed over the climate crisis. This may be because the adults in charge are causing an increase in the amount of greenhouse gases emitted instead of reducing them. They rose by 3.4 percent in 2018. Sounds to me like they should be concerned.
