The concepts of freedom and equality won out when gay marriage was made legal in the state of California. To me, marriage is simply a legally binding commitment between two individuals. The sex of these individuals is irrelevant. Monogamy should be supported whether it involves a man and a woman, a woman and a woman or two men. A life-long bond of involvement between two persons benefits society in two ways; one, of course is social stability. The other is less health risks. I’m not necessarily a big fan of the gay community, but I say “yes” to same sex marriage as a way of combating promiscuity and decreasing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS and others. Besides, it’s the legal right of two people to engage in a contract, in this case, the contract of marriage. It’s not a religious matter, but a practical and constitutional one.

I can understand that the traditional Christian definition of marriage is that between a man and a woman. But what about a secular marriage? Evolution should dictate change. If marriage is based on love and commitment, why then should it extend to one between two people of the same sex?

When you think about it, it’s a bit like the difference between Christmas and Happy Holidays. Traditional marriage based on the blessings of Jesus Christ in a church with a priest would be like Christmas. But Happy Holidays reaches more people, just as same-sex marriage is more inclusive. Jesus Christ, obviously, would be against gays marrying. It says so in the Bible. But Christianity is not the only religion under which two may unite. In fact, uniting under a religion is not required at all. The union is what is important, whether religious or secular, and this union should be honored by the state with all the benefits that accompany it.
