Eddie Pietrzak’s letter of Dec. 30 about the big earthquake near Eureka brought back memories of that date. I’m glad he knew the date.(Nov. 8, 1980).

About noon that day, I was on the Crown City, the largest and newest ferry heading for Coronado, (it had no super structure, so pedestrians walked on and off using the vehicle ramps). As we approached the slip on Coronado (the left of two) just about when one expected the captain to reverse the engines to slow the approach into the slip, we went sailing sideways past the slip toward I.B.

The surge from the earthquake up in Eureka had make its way down the length of California, around Pt. Loma and up into San Diego Bay. Nothing was visible, and the ferry captain brought the Crown City back into the slip.
