The San Diego regional coalition of Supervisor Greg Cox, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina, Port Commissioner Garry Bonelli, and I presented our plan to address the transboundary sewage issue to key White House officials from Intergovernmental Affairs and the Office of Management and Budget last week.

This meeting comes after nearly two years of advocacy, raising awareness and bringing the right agencies together that have the capabilities to address this crisis.

Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency and the County of San Diego released complementary reports that identified potential fixes to the sewage issue which would decrease the number of days of transboundary sewage flows from 130 days to 12 days per year.

The request last week was for the Administration to support our plan for a diversion and treatment facility funded through an increase in capital shares to North American Development Bank and a restoration of the Border Water Infrastructure Program funding.

Everything is now in place for a bipartisan victory to address this decades-old problem.

I would like to thank Councilmember Whitney Benzian for serving on the City Council subcommittee working on this issue for the past two years and the entire Coronado City Council for their unwavering support to solve this environmental disaster.

The time for studies and raising awareness is now behind us. We have a plan and a price tag. It is now time for our Congressional delegation and the Trump administration to take action.
