J.F. Kelly Jr. believes that racial profiling is a good idea. In his article headed “The Voters Deserve More Choices,” he says that the New York City policy of “stop and frisk” was never popular among blacks, hispanics, and liberals who opposed profiling.

My caregiver who is black and I a year ago were driving to the Coronado Library where I attend a weekly creative writing class. She had never been there before and I was not sure of the way, so she pulled into the curb and out again when I realized it was not the right way. Suddenly we heard the sound of a police siren. The officer started to write a ticket without telling us what we had done wrong. My caregiver remained cool and collected, kept asking what her offense had been. The officer finally said that my caregiver had pulled away from the curb without turning on her left turn signal.

A ticket for that minor offense? It happens a million times a day and no one gets stopped. The officer finally realized that this black lady was no dummy so let her go with just a warning.

This was clearly a case of racial profiling and I don’t think it’s okay.
