Port Proposes Pool For Toxic Dump Site

The Port’s proposed master plan allows for a major hotel at the location of Il Fornio and the adjacent large paved parking lot. A hotel proposal shows a large swimming pool and an underground parking garage on the site of the paved parking lot.

In 1993, a plan for a “restaurant row” was put on hold when it was discovered that soil samples from the site turned up traces of lead, copper, zinc, chromium and high levels of arsenic. The contamination is believed to have been left behind from an adjacent former boat repair site.

In 1995, it was determined that the cost of off-site treatment of the soil would be very expensive and hazardous to workers. A Remedial Action Plan recommended that encapsulating the soil with an asphalt cap would effectively reduce the risk of exposure to toxic contaminants in the long term.

The Port planners have really missed the mark by calling to “require major redevelopment and new development” in this area.
