At the risk of beating this issue to death, we would like to share some brief musings on the proposed Port plan. We did some basic math and realized that with 350 rooms at the proposed hotel and 142 rooms already in the works at the Hotel Del (and assuming normal double occupancy), this could swell our visitor population per day by almost 1000. Think of our downtown now during our peak tourist seasons and add an additional 1000 “visitors” to it. Let’s also contemplate the crowd control issues that our police and fire personnel will have to deal with if they can even reach a problem in time. And we also know that the majority of these 1000 visitors will probably not arrive via public transportation. Add several hundred vehicles to the mix, perhaps? We guess that’s what the attractive parking garage is for.

One last thought. One of us remembers leaving Coronado in the 90’s to go to work on Point Loma using Harbor Drive. It would take them approximately 30 minutes and 30 minutes returning in the afternoon. How many of us have even tried negotiating Harbor Drive past the Convention Center and Ball Park without getting snarled in traffic for at least 30 minutes? The Harbor Drive and Gaslamp district is an overdeveloped nightmare. If all this development is being offered as an example of what the Port Commission has done for the city of San Diego and will do for Coronado, count us out. This is a developer’s dream. They will cash in and leave and we will be left with the results.

Sincerely
