It is time to pay attention to what is happening in Coronado regarding the Port Authority’s Master Plan, Nautilus Room, Coronado Community Center 5:30 p.m. Monday July 15. Be there!

Fellow Coronadans, the San Diego Port Authority is getting ready to approve an updated Master Plan that will outline guidelines for the development of the land around San Diego Bay.  Port Authority staffers have been working on this issue since 2013 and are getting ready to submit their final proposal to the Port Authority Commissioners for a vote later this year. We have until July 31 to provide the Port Authority with our written concerns regarding that plan.

In order to do so, it is imperative that we learn about the proposals that will affect our community for years to come. We cannot complain about the changes that are coming if we do not understand what they are, and we don’t voice our opinions regarding the proposals.

I, and perhaps 10 other Coronado citizens attended last night’s public forum in Imperial Beach. I found the program of little use. The Port Authority staffers outlined the procedure they undertook to develop the plan, but had little in the way of specific detail. It was up to attendees to find individual staffers to answer their specific questions on a one-on-one basis. At no time were we as a group offered specifics relating to the development of the two districts that affect us – Coronado Bayfront and the Silver Strand.

Port Authority staffers advised us that there will be a subsequent public forum in Coronado at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 15, in the Nautilus Room of the Community Center, 1845 Strand Way. It is imperative that we have as many attendees as possible. When I asked how many people had attended previous public fora throughout San Diego, the best guess was several hundred. Without significant public input, this program update will reflect only Port Authority staffers’ best efforts and not specifically the interests of the people directly affected. I ascribe only the best motives to the Port Authority staffers, but to be fair, they don’t live here and don’t necessarily understand local concerns regarding the development of our bayfront and Silver Strand. Please join me on Monday, July 15, and make your voices heard.
