I think I speak for most people, when I say I’m over the stay at home order. As a mother of two active boys, I am always looking for ways to tire them out and keep them in a good mental headspace. They are avid skateboarders, and with skateparks closed, that does not leave many options for places to skate. They are always accompanied by an adult when skating off our block. We have been yelled at for skateboarding on the sidewalk, in the bike lane, on the side of the street, and in an empty parking lot! They maintain social distance and move to be respectful. They are not destructive or damaging private property.

Skateboarding seems to have a negative reputation, particularly among the older members of our community. Turns out, skateboarding is an Olympic sport, and many Olympians are training in San Diego. Skating is a high energy activity perfect for social distancing. There is no sharing equipment or team in close proximity. It’s a solo, keep your distance, good workout. Skateboarding is great for balance, coordination, and stress relief. It requires practice and determination. When the Coronado Skatepark opens, it’s a great place to socialize in a safe environment.

We are living through a trying time, so please Coronado, let them skate! Instead of saying something, just watch for a minute or let them show you a cool trick. It may even add a little excitement to your day!
