We had occasion some years back to spend several months each year in Turkey over a four-year period. What I still remember very clearly was the display of the national flag on virtually every business, dwelling and boat. Flags were usually on display at every residence in whole blocks. They were everywhere and all the time.

We walk part the island for exercise typically four times a week covering about 4 miles each time. I’m disappointed that our flag does not appear often. Our routes take us mostly through residential neighborhoods. Typically we might see one flag on display per block. And often that is in conjunction with a flag from one of the military services.

The dearth of flags on display is a constant disappointment for us and stands in stark contrast to the displays we saw in Turkey. How can this be? Coronado is home to three naval bases and so many in-service and retired military personnel. The city does a great job showing the flags along Orange Avenue along the median, (thanks in part to the Rotary Club), and on the banners attached to the overhead light pillars. But it is up to us, the citizens and residents, to step up and do our part to celebrate our freedom and proud history.

Some might say that this isn’t Turkey and I am very happy it is not. Everyone in the USA has the freedom to choose and you might prefer not to display the flag. But my guess is the great majority of us will. Let’s make the same proud impression on visitors to Coronado as Turkey does to its visitors.
