TO: Coronado Mayor, Richard Bailey, Honorable City Council Members, City Manager and City Clerk:

Please see attached a proposal from the Coronado community regarding the creation of a Ferry Landing Legacy Team, whose purpose it is to “Preserve the legacy of the Coronado Ferry Landing for the benefit of the public as well as future generations.”

We ask that this proposal become a part of the public record for the July 16, 2019 City Council Meeting.

“Thank you for doing your part to help keep Coronado the special place that it is!”

CONCEPT / OBJECTIVE:

Coronado Ferry Landing Upgrade Legacy Team Proposal
July 2019

“Preserve the legacy of the Coronado Ferry Landing for the benefit of the public as well as future generations.”

Engage local architects, designers, developers, property management professionals and persons with environmental quality expertise to participate in a coordinated effort with the Port
and City officials, to create a Plan for redevelopment of the Ferry Landing site which would reflect a true legacy for Coronado.

Ensure that local residents have the primary voice and role in any redevelopment effort.

KEY POINTS :

Land Use

In the introduction to the City of Coronado’s General Land Use Plan, which was adopted in 1986 and last revised in 2003, it is noted:

“It is the fundamental goal of the Coronado City Council and function of the City’s ‘General Plan Policy Document’ to preserve and improve Coronado primarily as a beautiful, pleasant residential community in which to live, work, shop and pursue leisure-time activities.”
Reasonable Planning and Development Not Over-Development

Reasonable Planning and Development, Not Over-Development

The Coronado community firmly supports and encourages better maintenance and the modest remodeling and modernization of the Ferry Landing property. We believe any future leaseholders must maintain the charm and beauty of the Site, which requires intensive maintenance to address the extensive tourist traffic.

A refreshed remodel of the Site should include a change in leasehold management to one that is better equipped to maintain both these minimal standards and the charm – and to achieve “understated elegance.”

Further, we also encourage the continued maintenance of modest-cost dining alternatives, such as the existing KFC and Burger King franchises and other local affordable establishments (Spiros, Village Pizza), which give residents, tourists and existing employees and military personnel and their families affordable dining options.

CONCLUSION:

Our beautiful Bay and coast are precious and limited resources. They should not be developed in a manner that impacts the access of the public, threatens our environment, and disregards the individuals who call this unique coastal community home.

Respectfully
