Is It Time To Just Opt Out of SANDAG?

Last week the 21 member San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) voted to require Coronado to build 1001 affordable residential units in spite of hundreds of opposition letters and emails, and in-person testimony by citizens and our elected officials. What part of we-have-no-buildable-bare-space could they not understand?

Exasperated, Mayor Bailey is quoted in the San Diego Union Tribune as declaring, “Coronado will not go down without a fight.” (Lemon Grove, Imperial Beach, National City, and Solana Beach, also assigned unrealistic housing quotas, vigorously joined in the protest.)

So what next? I hope the Mayor and City Council have a strong plan. Meanwhile those of us who were active in the effort are brain storming ideas. I am thinking just opt out of SANDAG. We don’t need them. Refuse to pay any fines they may impose for noncompliance, then sue in state court for fining a municipality for not doing the impossible.

My favorite fantasy is just detach from San Diego County. Like San Francisco, become a free standing combined city-and-county. Keep the property tax money at home. Run this island ourselves. Coronado is one of the best managed American cities. Our elected folks can show ‘em how it is really done.

Onward and upward,
