The recent political letters in your paper identify our country’s principal political problem: The Right is stubborn and blinded by hate. The Right hates the Left so much that it puts beating them ahead of everything else. Ahead of beating the Russians, ahead of beating the Chinese, ahead of science, and ahead of people’s democratic right to vote. It wins at all costs, with no compromising. The Right has become addicted to having an enemy, mostly because of Fox News, which daily tells it to be afraid and who to blame. It’s made the word liberal into a dirty word, even though I think it only means to be open-minded, tolerant, and wanting to learn more and improve. What a shame that our kids in America are denied that.

We on the left know, we don’t think, we know, that people on the right are patriotic and have the best interests of the country in mind. They are well intentioned. They just do evil things because they operate under misconceptions. The misconceptions are ingrained in the Right and they stubbornly stick to them and are not interested in learning or knowing the facts.

Here are some of those misconceptions (in each category we on the Left believe the problem is about 10% to 20% whereas you on the Right think it’s around 80% to 90%): If you’re poor it’s your fault; if you’re sick it’s your fault; only cheaters get government benefits; being gay is a choice; guns make us safer; white men are the norm; government can’t work; we should fear people different from us; and, businessmen are our saviors.

The truth is, there’s no conspiracy against you on the Right, you’re not victims, and there’s no agenda. If you like hard work, vote for Democrats; if you like being frugal, vote for democrats, if you like freedom and individual rights, you should be voting for democrats. Republicans say those things but they don’t do them. The Democratic party isn’t perfect, and we should all work together to shape it up, but the Republican party is unsalvageable in its present state. Its solution to every problem is to lower taxes, and pray. The rest of us are stuck in the real world, trying to figure things out and improve ourselves. I wish you on the Right would join us and the rest of the world instead of only trying to win elections by any means.

Thank you
