I think that J.F. Kelly gets it exactly wrong, in his commentary on Sept. 4, “A Generation Ignorant of History.” It’s a pretty standard screed about all those airhead kids - but it makes me wonder: does Mr. Kelly actually know any young people?

I do. I’m lucky enough to be around people in their late 20s, quite a bit and here’s how I’d describe them: smart, engaged, thoughtful… Not at all the mindless crybabies that Mr. Kelly describes. I’d say they’re a lot more knowledgeable of history than he gives them credit for; but what they’re really thinking about is the future! Yeah, they’re concerned about it. They’re well aware of what virtually all scientists in the world agree on and are especially concerned that if we don’t tackle those climate issues head on - then all the rest of it might not even matter. An, it’s not only climate issues that they’re thinking and worrying about either.

Mr. Kelly insists that those young people are mostly just interested in voting for the candidate that “promises the most free stuff” and I think that is where he gets it wrong. They expect the way forward will be difficult - and can see that it would be easier to just continue on as we have been. That path is looking less and less viable by the day, but it’s clear that Mr. Kelly won’t budge. Daunting though it may be, younger people that I know see the future as a challenge that they must address.

Mr. Kelly is smart and experienced, but his cranky inflexibility makes it difficult for him to see that a 30 year old may see certain things more clearly than he does.
