I was disappointed our city council recently failed to approve the Logos Youth Center, a decision that should be revisited at the May 7 meeting.

The visionaries of Logos designed this center to serve our youth at no expense to taxpayers. This generous gift and ongoing stewardship will provide our youth, who despite the affluence of Coronado, are at significant risk for addictions and other dangerous behavior due to lack of supervision during after school and evening hours. With many dual working parents, single parents and sadly a few parents who’ve “given up” on parenting, our teens have few outlets outside organized sports, NJROTC and CoSA where they can relax in a supportive, supervised environment, receive educational support, mentoring and guidance in navigating the challenging teen years.

I write as a former educator at CHS (Coronado High School) and a church youth leader for the past 13 years. AT CHS, the NJROTC unit served as a meeting place for teens, even those who weren’t enrolled in the unit. Students stayed after school in the ROTC room, some for team practices, some for homework help and others just to hang out. This “fellowship” improved school attendance, academic performance and in at least one instance prevented a suicide attempt during that student’s time at CHS.

Logos Youth Center will provide that same supportive atmosphere for all the youth of our community. The need is there; the leadership of our schools and other youth organizations have affirmed this fact. City Council should revisit their short-sighted decision.
