Let us take a moment to appreciate the outstanding way our small town is managed by elected officials and professional staff. This is an important win.

Over time it will take all of us, government and citizens, steadfastly working together to protect and preserve this island. Current threats: The Port Commission planning staff still thinking about building on the open space next to Il Fornaio, and SANDAG trying to impose 1001 units of designated affordable housing.

Inevitably desirable locations like Coronado will attract investor attempts at exploitation. We shall surely face endless pop-up over-kill financial interests from time to time, but if our stewardship stays strong we can continue to prevail.

I am thinking our permanent weakness is the increasing percentage of second homes in the Village, Cays, and Shores. If the correct number really is 60%, then they are in the majority. Most of those owners will not be here enough of the year to understand the dangers we face, and some may be tempted by the very profitable short-term rental market.

But today, celebrate winning that short-term law suit, and let the enforcement conditions brought down on the guilty owner be a warning to would-be scoff laws.

I am adding here a public reminder to Port Commissioner Bonelli: Don’t forget your promise to support and protect Coronado’s preferences. Keep the open lot next to Il Fornaio OPEN. Clean up the Ferry Landing business sites. Shape up that negligent master tenant. Remember who you represent.
