I have attended a handful of film festivals over the years, including several visits to Sundance, but none has the heart that our film festival has shown, year after year.

Orange Avenue was decorated with temporary stars with names like Lucille Ball and Steven Spielberg, to my favorites like Tony Perri, Jacques Spitzer, Elizabeth Wampler, and Steve Wampler – my hometown favorites.

What’s different about our film festival is that it is not about the celebrity sightings like other film festivals, it is about us! The festival has the look and feel of our hometown, which is special. I recognized many of the festival goers as Coronado residents, but I also met a lady who was from Egypt, who was here to enjoy the festival.

A treat every year is seeing Leonard Maltin come back to Coronado, the Hollywood legend that has been involved with the film festival since its inception. Two of my favorite events were the presentations at the Winn Room by Greg Sherman, the son of one of the Sherman Brothers. The Sherman Brothers were the songwriting duo that wrote the music to many of the Disney movies from the 1960s into the 2000s and wrote music for the “It’s a Small World” ride at Disneyland. One of Greg Sherman’s presentations featured a live piano player who led the room in a sing-along of “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” from “Mary Poppins.” You couldn’t leave the Winn Room that day without a smile on your face.

I salute the organizers and all of the great volunteers that helped make the film festival weekend so special; I’m already looking forward to next year’s festival!
