In response to the letter by David Stolte in the Aug. 14 edition of the Eagle regarding Jimi Hendrix’s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, I completely disagree with his negative characterization of this version of our National Anthem. And I’m not alone - here’s a newspaper quote from the Star Spangled Music Foundation: “It’s the single most powerful performance of the anthem in the history of the song,” says Mark Clague, an associate musicology professor at the University of Michigan who heads the Star Spangled Music Foundation, dedicated to celebrating and promoting the anthem. “In some ways it’s a kind of musical depiction of democracy…in the sense that it’s a cacophony of disagreement.”

Also, Jimi Hendrix mentioned on the Dick Cavett show that he always sang the anthem in school and that motivated him to write his version. And by the way, Hendrix is a veteran of the Army’s 101st Airborne Division.

Oh, and one more thing: I was standing 30 feet from Hendrix when he performed the Anthem at Woodstock - It was a magical moment and I will never forget it.
