In response to Julia Viera’s letter in the Eagle & Journal edition of Oct. 20, I would like to clarify the charter of the Cultural Arts Commission. Our volunteer commission is a recommending body whose objective is to develop an annual plan to maintain and enhance all aspects of arts and culture in our wonderful community. This includes everything from support for Parks and Recreation, the Library, the Historical Association, the Spreckels center and all our arts organizations (Lambs, CIFF, Musica Vitale, the Community Band et al). In addition, our recommendations include exhibits, musical events and public art opportunities. We submit a work plan at the beginning of every year which is reviewed, revised and approved by the City Council. Individual projects are brought to Council for approval throughout the year, and their cost/benefit to the community is carefully considered.

There are challenges to living in a town that is one of the top tourist destinations in the United States. Along with those challenges (and the tourists) comes economic benefits and a year-round quality of life that is hard to find elsewhere. Our objective is to maintain and enhance that quality of life for the benefit of and, hopefully, the blessing of our community.
