I am very disappointed by the City Council’s decision concerning the Logos Youth Center. This decision should be revisited and amended, for the sake of all Coronado students.

I grew up in Coronado and was involved with Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church. Youth group always involved a game to get our blood flowing, and we usually had to play outside on our church’s small patch of grass -- a problem a basketball court would have solved. My friends and I would get together after school to hang out, but we didn’t have anywhere to go. Most places cost money, which we didn’t have. Instead, we would end up sitting at Avenue Liquor, at the Del, or finding a friend to drive us off island. None of those places offered anything constructive for us to do, and we ended up doing something stupid more than once.

Now I’m in college and I’m getting involved in youth group again, volunteering as an adult. I see the same need in our students today. The youth of Coronado deserve support from their community. The generosity that went into the funding of this project is a testament to the value we place on our students, and it’s time the City Council reciprocates. Logos Youth Center isn’t something that Graham Memorial needs, and it isn’t something that the churches of Coronado need. This youth center is something that our students need: a place to hang out with friends where money isn’t required, safe from inevitable, poor decisions.
