Today when I was walking down Orange Avenue, I noticed an adorable basket on a lady’s bike. I asked her where she got it, and she said, “from that bike shop on Orange.” Then she whispered, “But you could get it cheaper from Amazon.” I grinned and said thank you.

What I wish I would’ve said is, “No, thank you. I really love buying locally. Especially here on Coronado where our local businesses really depend on us to stay afloat.”

Can you imagine a future with local businesses boarded up, a future so many American towns have faced? The streets of Coronado are already looking different as developers take over and decide which businesses we’ll be exposed to - more larger chains who can afford the high rent. Fewer mom and pops. More money going into the wrong pockets, in my opinion.

Small businesses are at the heart of our town. In fact, we are at the heart of our town. As consumers we have more power than we even realize. When we vote with our dollars, we’re shaping the way things look and feel in our cities. in Coronado.

So this holiday season, ride down to Orange Avenue. Bring your voting dollars, and give it to the shops you really love. Sure, maybe you could get it cheaper on Amazon, but cheaper is not better. With a pro-local mindset, your voting dollars are going much further than the items you take home in your bike basket.
