This is a response to the constant barrage of negative publicity regarding bike lanes in Coronado. I believe it’s time someone spoke up and presented the many attributes of bike lanes. Traffic may not have slowed, but Glorietta Boulevard is now much safer for the many bicyclists, runners, joggers and walkers that now use the bike lanes. Speed surveys don’t show that drivers now stay in their lane providing a valuable safety barrier to vulnerable bike lanes users.
As a runner who frequently uses the bike lanes, I can personally attest to their safety benefit. I feel much safer in the bike lanes on Glorietta Boulevard. Prior to the installation of bike lanes while running in the parking lanes, I sometimes had to move onto the edge of the golf course because of what was perceived as a threat from cars driving too close to the curb. Bicyclists and runners deserve a safe place on the street, the same as automobiles.
The rest of the country is embracing the use of bike lanes as a means of public transit, exercise and reducing pollution from automobiles. In Coronado, many children commute to and from school on their bikes. Our citizens ride their bikes for exercise. All are entitled to the safety that a bike lane provides.
