At last week’s Council meeting we saw an egregious example of violating the Brown Act.

It all began when Councilperson Benzian had a motion on the floor, which it appeared the mayor did not support, regarding awarding the Coronado Island Film Festival committee $40,000 for an AV projector rental. Rather than vote on the motion, Mayor Bailey called for a 5 minute recess for the City Manager “to review the numbers.”

About 15 minutes later, the mayor called the Council back in session.

The mayor then announced that during the recess that “we had a representative from the Coronado Island Film Festival approach the City Council and share some information.” The representative from the Film Festival was then asked to share that information with the public. After the representative spoke, Benzian withdrew his motion.

My issue has nothing to do with an AV system rental, but with a citizen that thinks they have a right to meet privately with the City Council and with a Mayor that permits that to happen.

You can’t make this stuff up. It’s all on the video recording.
