SUBJECT: Waterfront Planning--no new hotel on Coronado Island.

As Coronado’s appointee to the San Diego Port Commission, by now you should be very aware that the citizens of Coronado adamantly oppose a hotel and parking garage on the bay front lot inside the Port’s jurisdiction at the Ferry Landing. This is terrible, irresponsible waterfront planning.

The bay shoreline is a public asset. The public is entitled to physical and visual access to the waterfront where ever and when ever possible. The San Diego Port Commission has repeatedly failed at that responsibility over the years. I am guessing this happens because San Diego county, as big in size as each of five New England states, is so rural. Those folks are not tuned into the coast until something awful happens. Like taking out the much loved vintage Anthony’s Seafood restaurant. Other equally bad examples are the solid wall of high-rise hotels along Harbor Drive, and the ballpark with seats facing downtown buildings instead of out to the beautiful maritime vista.

Be advised, all of Coronado is paying close attention. The Port Commission does not own the waterfront. The State does, in trust for the people. The Port Commission’s job is to be a responsible manager. A new hotel and parking garage anywhere on this island is irresponsible.

Coronado folks are organizing. I expect we will prevail with the help of the Coastal Commission. But the effort will require an unnecessary, insulting, time-consuming drain on citizen energy.

So Commissioner Bonelli, this is to suggest that it is not too late for you to be a hero, jump out in front of the parade, represent Coronado accurately, nix the hotel idea, leave that space as it is, open for walkers, bikers, kayakers, fishing, and just parking for a spell to enjoy the action on the bay. Get busy restoring the messy Ferry Landing. The Port’s tenant there needs to shape up, or have the seven-year remainder on that lease terminated for failure to maintain the property.
