In my travels, I once made the acquaintance of the owner of Coronado’s Cherokee Lodge, the stately, Victorian mansion-cum-bed-and-breakfast located at 964 D Avenue.

The gentleman told me that when he researched public records, he discovered that during the Second World War, legendary Admiral Raymond A. Spruance had been on title.

During World War Two, Admiral Spruance commanded U.S. Naval forces at the Battle of Midway (June 4, 1942), overseeing America’s pivotal Pacific Theater victory from his flagship USS Enterprise (CV-6), delivering the debilitating blow from which the Imperial Japanese Navy would never recover.

Although he was once a resident of our fair city, during the war, the venerable Admiral Spruance was most assuredly...away on business!
