As I wrap up 481 days of volunteer service in Kabul, Afghanistan, I’d like to take a moment to publicly reflect on my experience.

First of all, I want to thank all of the people of Coronado for your great support, particularly from Rotary, my PEO sisters, and especially my husband Marv Heinze.

I will miss many things as I return to Coronado. I will miss the opportunity to make a difference by combatting corruption at all levels of the government, fighting for children’s and women’s right to survive, and the opportunity to work within a marvelous population of Afghans, NATO, and Coalition partners.

I will not miss wearing body armor and carrying a weapon, commuting in armed vehicles and helicopters, the stagnating air pollution, or the seemingly unending stream of corruption at all levels of government. Nor will I miss the loss of colleagues due to bombings, shootings, and other lethal products of war.

I look forward to returning to beautiful Coronado and its wonderful residents this February. Thank you for your support and updates during the past 481 days I was away.
