The City Council picked the waterfront restaurant over a park on the open space next to Il Fornaio! Yes they did, at tonight’s (Dec. 21) Council meeting. Supported the Port of San Diego’s continued commercial desecration of our bay shoreline over the residents of Coronado. Turned up their collective noses with hardly a mention for the citizens who have been working on the issue.

The Council Guys actually expressed the opinion that, oh well, Senator Mills can be honored anywhere. Right. They totally fail to understand the basic reason for keeping and improving Coronado’s last remaining public access to our inland waterfront really is not to name it for Mills. Just naming the kind of project he would like for the late illustrious Coronado State Senator seemed like a nice local touch. It really doesn’t need to be named for anybody. It just needs to be.

Now what?

We think we know our elected officials, then they say in open meeting they wouldn’t want to disappoint the business interest planning to put another restaurant right where Coronado does not want a restaurant, or anything.

We think we have the best managed small town ever, then they demonstrate ignorance of basic urban planning.

And now, we don’t know what to think.
