Recently, J.F. Kelly criticized the new law coming out of Sacramento, AB 392, and taking effect on January 1, 2020. This law wants police officers “not to use deadly force except when necessary to save their lives or the lives of others, and only when they are in imminent danger and no other non-lethal alternative exists to de-escalate the situation.” Kelly believes AB 392 restricts to some degree the ability of police to protect the public or themselves. But the new law merely underlines what the police have been practicing all along, except for rogue officers whose panicked and poor judgment make headlines in the newspapers.

Ever since the riots of 1960s when police officers were first targeted by various factions, I came to realize that being a police officer was a dangerous and largely unappreciated vocation. Police officers hold the lives of others more sacred than their own, all the while searching for non-lethal alternatives to de-escalate the situations they face.

Make no mistake, a police officer holds the most important position in any community, and the most precarious. Combat veterans from Vietnam and the Middle East have the highest respect for the police because they endured similar experiences. Any quiet morning or peaceful evening in America can be shattered by explosive automatic weapons, and worse.

I’m confident Mr. Kelly means well, but if he truly wants to help police officers he should not be worried about Law AB 392 which reveals the mindset of all good officers, but turn his attention to Congress. Congress, even at this late date has done nothing to ban assault weapons. This ban would truly help save police lives and the lives of many others. Assault weapons must be banned as soon as possible – period! They should be only in the hands of the police or military – no one else.

The vast majority of Americans are in favor of such a ban. The latest poll (POLITICO/Morning Consult) has 91% of Democrats wanting the ban, 70% of the Independents and even 54% of Republicans. Meanwhile the White House is still fiddling around with ‘background checks’ as its grand plan to decrease the slaughter of Americans.

We have to convince that cartel of conservative Congressmen in Washington, presently in the pockets of the NRA, to vote to ban assault weapons. That sane decision would help save the lives of our police, citizens and innocent and defenseless children – can anyone forget Sandy Hook!

Of course this ban would not stop all those fixed on killing indiscriminately, but would decrease significantly the carnage automatic weapons reap. And so when one talk about safety, Law AB 392 is not the enemy - the enemy is Congress.
