William Edward Scannell, born on Nov. 11, 1934 in Muscatine, Iowa, to Mark and Catherine Scannell, passed away at age 84 on March 27, 2019 in San Diego.

William graduated from Muscatine High School in 1952. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Nebraska, his MS in Systems Engineering at Arizona State University, MS in Electrical Engineering at Southern Methodist University, and PhD in Psychology from USIU.

William served in the Air Force from 1954 to 1975. He served in the Vietnam War where he received four Distinguished Flying Cross Medals, 12 Air Medals, a Vietnamese Cross Gallantry with Palm, and a Meritorious Service Medal. A banner honoring his service is currently displayed on the Avenue of Heroes (Fourth and Palm) in Coronado.

Upon retiring from the military, William worked in the Aerospace Industry for General Dynamics and Northrup. He then worked as a psychologist until his retirement. 

William was the loving husband of Barbara, his wife of 61 years. In addition to his wife, William is survived by his sons, Mark (Sandy), David, and Stephen (Beth); daughters, Cindy (Clifford) Sweatte and Terri (Edward) Tyynismaa; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his brother, Joseph Scannell and sister, Betty Siegrist. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Scannell. 

William was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He loved travel, yachting and fishing and was a member of the Coronado Cays Yacht Club. Friends and family are invited to attend a Rosary Thursday, April 4 at 5 p.m. and the Resurrection Mass, officiated by Father Michael Murphy, at 9 a.m. Friday, April 5 both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 655 C Avenue, Coronado, California.

William will be interred at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
