Robert “Bob” Martin

On Sunday, June 6, 2021, Robert Martin, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 86.

Robert was born in Billings, Montana, and was the firstborn in his family of five. Later, Robert’s family moved to Idaho, where he attended Twin Falls High School and the University of Idaho. During his time at college, Robert met and married his wife Ruth. After the birth of their first son, the couple moved to San Diego where Robert pursued his career with Convair - now known as General Dynamics.

Over the years, Robert and Ruth were blessed with three more children, two daughters and a son, whom they raised on the beautiful California Coast. Robert shared his love for sailing and adventuring in the outdoors with his wife and four children. Later, he would also share these passions with his three beloved granddaughters.

Robert enjoyed a long and happy retirement after leaving General Dynamics in 1990. As co-pilots in their GMC motorhome, he and Ruth shared many adventures skiing, hiking, and biking in the Western United States. Some of their most treasured memories were cruising to Mexico and cycling across New Zealand.

For most of his retired life, Robert lived on the sailboat he built, named September Song. When he and Ruth weren’t sailing down the coast to Mexico, they kept September Song moored in the marina at the Coronado Yacht Club. Here, the couple was surrounded by other sailing enthusiasts, some of whom quickly became close, life-long friends.

Robert is dearly missed and remembered by his family and friends.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18.
