Michael Russ of Coronado, went home to be with the Lord, Feb. 15, 2019 after a long battle with prostate cancer.  

Mike was born to Lewis and Dorothy Russ in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, June 12, 1941. Mike moved to Coronado in 1944 with his mother and siblings, Dee and James Russ and attended Coronado High School, graduating with the class of 1959. Mike went on to start his own business, Mike Russ Schools in 1979.

He created what was at the time the largest insurance and real estate training program in the United States. Mike trained hundreds of thousands of students to prepare for the insurance and real estate licensing state exams. In 1997, sons Michael Mitchell and James Russ took over leadership of his company, changing the name to Mike Russ Financial Training Centers. Mike continued to work as a teacher for the company and led the Real Estate portion of the classes, as well as Life, Disability, Property and Casualty. Mike always said, “I love teaching so much, it never feels like work!” The business is still going strong today.

Mike was an avid skier, and loved spending time on the slopes. He encouraged many to ski and snowboard. He was a great ambassador for the sport. Mike loved traveling, and taking long road trips. His favorite places included Hawaii, Utah, Mexico, and Costa Rica. His very favorite place was Italy. He was very proud of his Italian heritage. Mike’s favorite holiday was the 4th of July in Coronado. He was always so excited to reunite with his high school buddies and attend the all class reunion at the Coronado golf course.

Michael is survived by his former wife Linda Russ of Coronado; and their seven children, Michael (Arlene) Mitchell, Dorothy Russ, Miki Russ, Cindy (Eric) Robledo, James (Mora) Russ, Stephen Russ, and Nicholas Russ. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Charlie Otterman, Danny Mitchell, Bryan Mitchell, Brittany Brunotte, Ryan (Jessica) Brunotte, Natasha Russ, Myles Russ, Isaiah Russ, and Alexandria Robledo; and two great grandchildren Caydence Otterman and Timothy Brunotte. Mike had nine brothers and sisters, Dee Russ, James Russ (deceased), Paul Baucom, Lyndee Stalter, Bonnie Simpson, Carmela Russ Swartz, Nicholas Russ, Lewis Russo Jr. (deceased) and Anthony Russ (deceased).

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held March 16, 2019, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Bahama Village Clubhouse, 43 1/2 Catspaw Cape, Coronado Cays.
