Laurie Lou Blackington

Laurie Lou Liberty - Blackington passed away surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

Growing up in Coronado, Laurie was a part of the original Coronado High Majorette class of 1955. She loved riding horses as a young girl in Coronado through the original golf course and Polo Fields. She continued her love and passion for horses while showing hunter jumpers with her daughter Alicia for a number of years.

Laurie met her lifelong naval officer husband Cmdr Richard “Dick” Nelson Blackington on a blind date. Laurie and Dick were married in the NAS North Island Chapel on Oct. 27, 1956. They were blessed with three children, Ken, Doug and Alicia.

Throughout Dick’s navy career, they were stationed on both the East and West Coasts while Dick was enlisted. In 1970 they returned to Coronado where they raised their three children. A philanthropist of the San Diego Globe Theater, Laurie was voted into a leadership role and served a term as President of the Globe Guilders.

Laurie lived the remainder of her life in Coronado where she enjoyed spending time with her family and neighborhood friends.

Laurie is survived by her two sons Ken (Sharyl) and Doug (Tracey); four grandchildren Tanner, Luke, P’ilanli, and Koa; and her nephew Jon Groves. Laurie’s husband Richard N. Blackington, her daughter Alicia, her sister Pearl and niece Becky preceded her in death.
