Karen Hayden (nee Stephens), aged 61, a lifelong Coronado resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 17, at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, surrounded by family.

Karen was born Dec. 10, 1957 in San Diego to Nicholas and Mary Louise Stephens (nee Dill), and was raised in Coronado with her sister Lisa and brother Nick. She attend Sacred Heart Parish School, and was a second generation Coronado High School graduate, graduating in 1976.

In 1979, she met her future husband Roger Hayden, and after a short courtship, they eloped in Las Vegas on Dec.7, 1979. They started their family a few years later, having four children in six years.

Karen was a full-time mom until 1995, when she started her 20+ year career at the Coronado School District, working various positions until retiring in 2018.

Known as “Momma K,” she opened her home to all and was always there for anyone who needed a shoulder to lean on or ear to listen.

She is survived by her husband Roger; her four children Geoffrey (Ashlee), Nikki-Marie, Brandon, and Gregory; and her five grandchildren Cody, Caitlyn, Ryan Sophia, Austin and Ellison.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation or the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
