Joyce Evelyn Schall, 93, of Coronado, died Jan. 22, 2021, at Vista Gardens Memory Care in Vista, California.
She was born on Feb. 12, 1927 in Traverse City, Michigan, daughter of Bernard and Sarah Baker Forton. Joyce graduated from Traverse City High School, Class of 1945, with a scholarship to nursing school. She met and married her husband, William Lawrence Schall, Sr. in 1952, and started a family of four children beginning in 1953.
Joyce and her family moved from Traverse City to Tucson, Arizona and again several years later in 1965 to Coronado. After the move to California, Joyce began working with elderly patients at the Coronado Hospital. This work illustrates her lifelong devotion as a caretaker for her family and others. All of her children believe and appreciate that she and their father William exemplified a commitment and willingness to sacrifice for the benefit of their children.
Joyce was an avid opera, beach, bingo and dog lover. She spent hours with her grandchildren at the beach every summer. Above all, Joyce loved being with and helping her family and friends. She had an inexhaustible supply of energy and love for them. Joyce was also an ardent supporter of St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Joyce is predeceased by her husband William in 1998;, her parents; and her three sisters, Jackie Hamlin, Shirley Dost and Wilma McClure. She is survived by her children, Elizabeth (Stephen) Mancuso of Phoenix, Arizona, William (Victoria) Schall, Jr. of Hypoluxo, Florida, Christopher (Sally Powell) Schall of Dallas, Texas, David (Kim) Schall of San Marcos, California; her 10 grandchildren, Nicholas Arle, Ashley Schall, Jeffrey Schall, Andrew Schall, Kelley Schall, Amy Schall-Salmon, Zachary Schall, Alex Schall, Emily Schall, Sarah Schall; and great grandchildren, Brian Jennings, Andie Hilgendorf, and Rhea Salmon.
