James (Jim) David Menges was born to Capt. Harold F. Menges (Chaplain, USN) and Alice Hatcher Menges on Dec. 3, 1940, at Fort Worth, Texas.

Jim was a carpenter by trade and worked in construction for many years later becoming a Pharmacy Technician with Safeway. Upon returning to Coronado in 2007 from Monument, Colorado where he had lived with his wife Marilyn for eights years, Jim volunteered at the Coronado Police Department and later at the Coronado Historical Association as an Ambassador.

Many of Jim’s fondest memories centered around listening to his Father practice his Sermons before delivering them to his congregations on Sunday mornings. His favorite memories also centered around sailing and being in conversation with President Truman after Jim’s Father was selected by the Navy to be President Truman’s Chaplain during the days President Truman visited his summer “Little White House” in Key West, Florida.

Jim also treasured being a Sponsor Parent to U.S. Air Force Academy Cadets: Andy Conwell (Class of 2005), Philip Cho, Josiah VanderMey, Kyle Sellner, Keri (Holcomb) Morris, Grant Smith, and Jason Dall, and Addison Harding (Class of 2009). There were also those very special times he spent with his son Todd Menges, daughter Tamara Menges Butler, son-in-law Scott Butler, and grand-daughter Evangeline Butler but most of all, with his wife of 28 years, Marilyn (Mark) Menges of Coronado.

Jim and Marilyn met while attending Coronado High School during their Senior Year, Class of 1959. In 1989, 30 years after they graduated from CHS, Jim and Marilyn re-met and later married on Aug. 18, 1990 in Temecula.

Jim is also survived by his older brother Paul Menges of Vacaville, California, and two adult step-children Jeffrey Skordas of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Cynthia (Skordas) Schneider of Tierrasanta and their adult daughters, Meghan and Katie Schneider and Victoria and Alexandra Skordas.

Jim was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease on Feb. 15, 2018 and on March 29, 2019 was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer which he succumbed to on May 29, 2019.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful care Jim received from the Kaiser Hospice Home Care Team, Kaiser Hospital, San Diego and Charlotte Chadwick, Care Giver.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony for Jim Menges will be held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 700 D Avenue, on June 15 at 2 p.m. Casual dress or Hawaiian attire appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kaiser Hospice Home Care Team at 10992 San Diego Mission Rd., San Diego, CA 92108 (make check to San Diego Hospice), or to the Coronado Historical Association at 1100 Orange Ave. Coronado, CA 92118, www.coronadohistory.org.
