Hester A. Held

Jan. 29, 1929 – May 6, 2019 | Posted: Friday, July 5, 2019 11:00 am

Hester Held was born in Washington D.C. She was the middle child of five children and the only daughter. God watched over Hester keeping her close through a difficult childhood. Her mother was ill when she was 5, so her father placed her and her four brothers in an orphanage until she was 9 years old. Hester lived with a variety of people after the orphanage. On Hester’s 16th birthday she was hit and dragged by a street car in D.C. Her injuries were serious and extensive. She was hospitalized for six months. It was God’s grace and the right doctor, who had also broken his back, who perfectly healed her without future complications.

While working for the government in D.C. she met her future husband Ralph Held. They were married Nov. 29, 1953. After a two week whirl wind honeymoon covering much of the United States they landed in Coronado, which became their permanent home. They became members of Christ Episcopal Church and enjoyed their many friends and fellowship.

Hester was an editor at General Dynamics Aerospace for 20 years. While working full time at G.D. she attended San Diego State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. Hester, Ralph and friends traveled extensively over 40 years to many countries. She enjoyed music, reading, theater, bridge and bowling.

Glory be to God for allowing us to have Hester in our lives all of these years. She was deeply loving, nurturing and compassionate. Hester’s life experiences enabled her to help each of her children and close friends with personal challenges. We look forward to being with her again for eternity.

Hester is survived by her children: John Held, Mark Held and Sandra (Mike Duncan) Held. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, July 20, at Christ Episcopal Church, 1114 Ninth Street in Coronado.
