Helen Harriet Varner March

Helen Harriet Varner March, 97, of Coronado, CA was united with her Heavenly Father on July 15, 2022. She was born on September 27,1924 in Vincennes, IN to Lydia Leah Slawson Varner and John Alexander Varner. She was married to Edwin Lamont March on August 29,1951.

Helen graduated from Hammond High School in Hammond, Indiana. She had many interests throughout her life. In addition to being the mother of six children, she was a dental assistant for many years; a Welcome Wagon representative; Women’s Club in Coronado; Officers’ Wives Clubs; Bridge and Bay Garden Club; Coronado Republicans Group; served many hours in the Navy Relief Society; a longtime member of the Coronado Hospital Foundation Auxiliary and donor; and also a Pink Lady.

At one time, Helen had her own catering and cake decorating business. For several years, she and her husband Ed owned and ran three Martha Baker Chocolates stores in North Park, San Diego, La Jolla, and Ocean Beach.

She was a regular and avid bingo player at the Senior Center and loved her bingo family. Helen was also a member of Sacred Heart Church in Coronado, and a member of the Altar Society. She was a wonderful and amazing mother, wife and friend to so many. She will be missed by all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Emerson Varner and Vance Varner; sister Hazel Aileen Varner McCray; son Gilbert Joseph March of Houston, TX; loving husband and father of their six children Edwin Lamont March (Lt. Cmdr., USN Retired). They were married just short of 69 years.

She is survived by her children Trudy V. Watkins of Ft. Wayne, IN, Edwin L March II (Georgette) of Lakeside, CA, James E. March of Escondido, CA, Kim Allan March of Vista, CA and Tracy A. Ramm (Donald) of Chula Vista, CA. Also six grandchildren: John D. Watkins (Sonia) of Woodland Hills, CA, Wendy Watkins McCollum (Jeff) of Madison, Wl, Natalie Dehesa Stutz (Tylor) of Wildomar, CA, Andre Dehesa, Avia R. Ramm and Charles J. Ramm, all of Chula Vista, CA; four great-granddaughters: Amelia, Melodie, and Hannah Watkins, and Stella Stutz; and two great-grandsons: Anthony J. Watkins and Nathan Stutz.

There will be a Memorial Service for Helen and Edwin on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 12 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 655 C Avenue, Coronado, CA, 92118. Open to all friends and family.
