Dorothy “Dottie” Frances Wincek

Dorothy “Dottie” Frances Wincek, a long-time resident of Coronado, died March 16, 2022 at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. She was 84.

Dorothy was born on Sept. 29, 1937 in Coronado, to parents John and Dorothy Tato. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Coronado High in 1955. She went on to college at the San Diego College for Women, (now known as University of San Diego), where she graduated in 1959 with her teaching credential.

She married her first husband, Walter J. Wincek, in 1959. He had joined the Navy and received orders and they moved to Japan. From there, they also lived in San Francisco and moved back to Coronado in 1965. They had bought their first house together in Coronado. Together, they had three children. Walter was later killed in a helicopter crash in December of 1966.

Dorothy then married her second husband, William Bokesch, a Navy pilot. They had one child together and were divorced in the late ’70s.

Dorothy went back to work at the Oriental Arts Import Store, where she had worked in high school. She then worked at Napolitano Realty for several years and then worked for Coronado Floor and Window until she retired.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and had many friends that she grew up with on the Island. After living in Coronado the majority of her life, she moved into the assisted living facility at the Nazareth House in 2021. She made a lot of new friends at the Nazareth House and they said she was the life of the party and had a very infectious laugh.

Dorothy was a loving daughter, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and great aunt. She is survived by her four children, Dorothy S. (James) Wincek-Wheeler, Walter J. (Karen) Wincek, Christopher (late Michelle) Wincek, and Patricia Bokesch (Peter) Shughrou; her four grandchildren Clara Wincek (Danny) Remmes, Molly Wincek, Adam and Kate Wincek; and her great granddaughter Eleanor Remmes. She is also survived by her brother John Tato (Barbara).

Dorothy’s service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado on Friday, May 6 at 11 a.m. with reception to follow in the Parish Hall. She will be buried at Holy Cross Cemetery.
