Capt. Almer “Al” Charles Vold, US Navy (Ret)

Al was born in Lisbon, North Dakota, and attended Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota from 1954-1956. Upon observing a Navy Blue Angels air show, he chose to enter the Naval Aviation Cadet program where he earned his commission in December 1957 and received his “Wings of Gold” at NAS Kingsville, Texas, in June 1958. His initial operational tour was with VS-21 located at NAS North Island where he flew the S-2 “Tracker.” From 1978-1981, Al was assigned to Naval Air Station, North Island, again where he served on COMNAVAIRPAC staff in various assignments to include shore activities management officer, assistant Force Operations officer and the Force Operations officer.

He retired from the Navy in 1986 and chose their retirement home to be in Coronado where he continued to work for 20 more years as a civilian program manager supporting DoD and NAVAIR activities responsible for program/financial controls and management procedures of multi-functional teams, administering major ILS and aircraft maintenance programs for F/A-18, AV-8, SH-60, H-53 and E-2C managers.

Al is survived by his spouse of 63 years, the former Joy Tanner of Pensacola, Florida; two sons, Andrew of Chandler, Arizona, and Monty (Susan) of Leavenworth, Kansas; grandchildren Nicolette, AJ, Tyler and Jessica; his siblings Edith Vold Reinke of Lisbon, North Dakota, and Jerry (Jo Ann Chichisola) Vold of Bennett, Colorado; sister-in-law Sandra Riley Vold of Alto, New Mexico; and several nieces and nephews. As was preceded in death by his brother Roger Vold and brother-in-law Marvin Reinke.
