Aida Palange Baker

Aida Palange Baker passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021, at the Coronado Retirement Village. She was 100 years old.

Born March 29, 1921, she was the youngest child of the late John and Maria (Sassana) Palange. Aida was born in Oakland, California, where she attended Castlemont High School and USC for a time. She married Capt. James Ellis Baker on Sept. 9, 1947, and raised two sons. Due to her husband’s Navy career, they moved and lived in several states: Kansas, Washington, Virginia and back to California. After Jim’s retirement, they resided in Guadalajara, Mexico, for ten years. They returned to the states in 1975 and made Coronado their home. Her husband passed away on March 22, 1984.

Aida led a life of service to her church and the hospital. As a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, she distributed communion to patients and residents at the hospital and nursing home every week for years. In 2010 she was honored by the Catholic Charities of San Diego for her decades of dedicated service. At the same time, she volunteered more than 10,000 hours to the Coronado Hospital and served as President of the Auxiliary for two years. In June 2021, Aida was named an island icon and featured in the July 2021 edition of the Coronado Magazine.

Aida lived a long, rich and deserving life. Her husband and sons were the light of her life. Throughout her journey, she made life-long friends who were so important to her in the later stage of her life. She loved her family and friends deeply. She always had a kind word and warm smile for everyone she met.

Survivors include her sons, Marvin (Carmie Donadi) Baker of Butler, Pennsylvania , Anthony (Patti Miller) Baker of Sunnyvale, California; grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Joseph, Louis, Adaline and Mary.

The family of Aida Baker sends heartfelt gratitude to the staffs of Sonata Hospice and the Coronado Retirement Village for the kind and compassionate care which they rendered to her. The visits and prayers from clergy were greatly appreciated and meant so much to Aida. Her friends were her family in Coronado; and they freely provided the love, time and support to her that a family member would. They were her guardian angels.
