Islander Girls Volleyball Head Coach Adeile Ahmu returns for her second season at the helm of the program, where she will coach a very young team. Six seniors graduated from last year’s squad which earned the No. 10 seed in the CIF Division III Playoffs. Ahmu rides into the 2019 season with two seniors, three juniors and nine sophomores on the roster.

“All of our sophomores are very disciplined, and they have been playing for the whole year, including club volleyball. They bring a lot of energy and motivation for the other girls. We are going to be a young team, but I feel they are very mature in their understanding of the game.”

Ahmu worked her way through the lineup, which just began training together at the beginning of this week, with tryouts concluding last week. “Senior Elizabeth Hunsaker, sophomore Zoe Johnstad and junior Caitlin Kane were all on the varsity last season. Hunsaker plays middle, Kane is an outside hitter and Johnstad is our starting libero. And we have two setters who are in their rookie varsity seasons in sophomores Jenna Tocorzic and Sarah Acuff. They were setters and opposites on the JV last year. This year we are running a 6-2 offense, with two setters on the floor. They are both good hitters and play good defense. Their eye work (ability to see the full court) is impeccable for sophomores. This is Jenna’s first full year setting. She trained and converted into being a setter over the club season.”

Ahmu continued, “Junior Veronica Allen is playing in the middle for us and she brings a very tall block. Sophomore Marlie Meoni is contending for a position as an outside and as a defensive specialist. Sophomore Josephine Bustos is a utility player who plays opposite and is a defensive specialist. We’ll primarily utilize her on the back row. They are all up from the JV team last year and they have experience in our system. Almost the entire JV team came up to the varsity.”

There is a new member of the Islander coaching staff, Freshman Team Coach Erin Madray. “She brings a lot of depth to the program,” Ahmu said. “She has a lot of experience coaching middle school-aged Girls. She also played volleyball in college where she was a three-sport athlete who competed in volleyball, softball and basketball. Erin has also assisted with strength training for the team. Coach Kameelah Hopkins returns as the JV Head Coach and she will assist at the Varsity level.”

Coronado will once again compete in the Eastern League, a circuit that will include Coronado, Mission Bay, University City, the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, High Tech High San Diego, and Christian. “I have high hopes and high expectations,” Ahmu said in conclusion. “Almost all of the team has been in the program since middle school and they know what to expect. I’m excited for another season. This is my second year as Varsity Head Coach, so I’m not as nervous as I was last year. And I have a good rapport with these Girls.”

The Girls Volleyball Team’s first regular season game will be Friday, Aug. 23 at home against Helix. The JV will play at 3:30 p.m. and the varsity will take the court around 5 p.m.
